Dr. Owen Bovell, Head of Forestry Department

Dear Students,
Welcome to the Forestry Department!

If you are looking for a programme that is both academically challenging and full of adventure, you are in the right place. Our department has a proud history of contributing to national development, guided by the Green State Development Strategy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since its establishment in 2000, the Department has expanded its academic offerings from the former Diploma in Forestry (no longer offered) to the Associate of Science in Forestry and the Bachelor of Science in Forestry. These programmes are carefully designed to provide you with a strong balance of theoretical knowledge, practical training, and experiential learning—preparing you to become highly competent forestry professionals capable of addressing the needs of both the public and private sectors.

As part of our mission, we also play a leading role in advancing forestry education, research, and sustainable practices across the Caribbean. Through partnerships with regional and international institutions, and with the support of our Forestry Advisory Board, we are committed to developing future leaders.

Through our practical training, you will travel to different parts of Guyana, explore its breathtaking forests, and gain real-world skills in forest management, timber production, and environmental forestry. This makes our programme not only rigorous, but also one of the most exciting and rewarding educational journeys you can take in the region.

And it’s not all work—our Forestry Club provides a vibrant community where you can build friendships, sharpen your soft skills, and enjoy a full university experience. Here, you will grow not only as a forestry professional, but also as a well-rounded individual ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

I encourage each of you to make the most of your time here: learn actively, participate fully, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to strengthen the forestry sector in ways that support national development and contribute meaningfully to global sustainability.
