Welcome to your new home!
Mr. Owen Bovell, Dean Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry
Welcome to the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry at the University of Guyana. The Faculty is located on two campuses, Berbice and Turkeyen.
As Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, I am pleased to invite you to take a closer look at us—our people, our programs, at the University of Guyana.
In this Faculty, you will find excellent programs and staff to guide you through a journey of higher education. Our Faculty is recognized nationally, regionally and internationally for programs in Forestry and Agriculture. We have faculty with Ph.D.’s from major universities in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean, who bring the best in their discipline to the classroom, laboratory and in the field. And we have a dedicated and hard-working team of support staff who keep our research center, offices and laboratories productive. Both faculty and support staff strive to give students the personal attention they deserve.
At the University of Guyana, we offer traditional agriculture degree programs you would expect like, general BSc degree in Agriculture with majors in Animal Science, Agronomy, Soil Science and Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquaponics. We also have a BSc degree in Forestry with majors in Timber Production, Forest Management and Environmental Forestry, as well as an Associate Degree in Forestry. As a Faculty, we plan to move forward with strategic initiatives to create unique opportunities for students to be highly engaged in hands-on learning activities. Enrichment experiences may take place on the campus, around the country, and could even include international opportunities. For those with a desire to go on to the post graduate level in Agriculture, we offer an academic experience in the MSc in Agrotechnology and Business.
In the recent past, the Department of Agriculture has signed two MOUs with the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff and the People’s Friendship University of Russia to develop superior sweet potato lines and to establish an Agrarian Centre, respectively. These activities will certainly contribute to long term sustainable agricultural development. Additionally, the Faculty received state of the art laboratory equipment through a US$10M university loan from the World Bank to improve the science Faculties on campus.
We have a very close affiliation with the Guyana School of Agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute, the Guyana Livestock Development Authority, Guysuco, the Guyana Rice Development Board, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture, FAO, World Wildlife Fund, the Iwokrama International Rainforest Centre and the Guyana Forestry Commission. The facilities of these agencies coupled with that of our on-campus research centre serve as the hub for our teaching and research programs. These entities provide real world, hands-on experience for our students in addition to providing opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research. We believe that a quality tertiary education should also be a hands-on experience.
Additionally, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry is blessed with outstanding alumni and industry partners. We call on our Forestry and Agriculture advisory boards to help guide and support the teaching, research and outreach programs. The boards meet to critique our curriculum, research programs, and facilities. They strive to enhance faculty teaching and research and have provided great ideas and support.
In summary, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Guyana is providing relevant degree programmes for our students that lead to satisfying and productive careers. We continue to focus on teaching and mentorship even as we pursue relevant research. Our programmes are generating knowledge and disseminating results that add economic value and improve the quality of life for people in Guyana and regionally. Thank you for visiting with us, and if we can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
